From childhood I was never satisfied with myself or my surroundings. I was always discontented, and longed for some assurance that there was something besides this life, which seemed so empty. I was very sensitive, and as I grew older was often melancholy and gloomy for days at a time. There seemed to be so much evil and injustice all around me that I often asked myself if life were really worth living. I always believed that God was good, but was told that He sent evil for some wise purpose, and this was very confusing to me.
At the age of nineteen I went to assist in the household of a family who were Christian Scientists. The quiet atmosphere and their kindness attracted me; they seemed to possess something that I was looking for all the time, so I decided to find out what it was. Science and Health was always on their reading table and they told me that I might read it if I wished. I did read it in all my spare moments, and soon purchased a copy. I also attended church, for I had found the truth about God,—that He is good only. This revelation was such a joy that for many days I lived on the mountain top of perfect bliss. But I have since been down in the valley to work from the bottom up, and there have been some fierce battles and fiery trials.
There have been many cases of physical healing in our family. With the help of a faithful practitioner several members have been restored to health in a short time, although conditions seemed serious. The physical healing is enough for everlasting gratitude, but the mental uplift stands forth like a bright illumination. We do indeed thank God that Mrs. Eddy discovered Christian Science.—Mary D. Voelzke, Elgin, Okla.
