My first healing in Christian Science brought the clear...
My first healing in Christian Science brought the clear conviction that I had found the truth, and that assurance has never left me. It is eighteen years since that healing. I was then an invalid, suffering from nervous breakdown and other physical conditions. For years I had been struggling to keep up on will power and with the aid of physicians. After four months of illness and idleness I made an attempt to take up a part of my professional work, but met with failure. Once more the friend who had many times before spoken to me of Christian Science, asked me if I would not try it. Discouraged and bitter I asked, "Will it heal me?" and the answer came, "Yes, it will."
Two days later I saw a Christian Science practitioner. I was full of argument and a desire to know all the deep things of God, but she wisely led me to see that in Science as well as in all human knowledge the first steps must be taken before the more advanced ones can be understood. Never shall I forget the illumination that came with that first healing; the world seemed a different place, for there was joy instead of sadness, hope instead of despair. Best of all there was given to me a God I could love, and a Bible I could read and begin to understand. Although religiously brought up, for years I had had no interest in the Bible, as it gave me no comfort. This was all changed in a few days. I perceived the meaning of Jesus' teachings and practice, and that his example was for us now, and for all to follow.
It seems almost needless to say that I received the physical healing; that from the despairing invalid who was only able to sit up a part of each day, and who could not walk the distance of a city block without collapsing from the effort, I was able the third day to walk fourteen blocks. With this first understanding of Christian Science there was the complete destruction of any belief in the power of a drug to heal, and there has never been in all these years the slightest temptation to turn to material remedies again.
