Christian Science found me when to mortal sense all...
Christian Science found me when to mortal sense all was darkness and despair. My one longing was to quit a life which was filled with sorrow and sickness; but I am now full of gratitude to the dear Master, who said, "Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest," for I am finding rest from grief and sickness through the study of the Bible and of our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. This textbook has illumined the Bible and revealed its wealth of promises to me and to all mankind. To me it was a glorious revelation to be shown that I could claim to be a child of God, inseparable from His love. In the first epistle of John we read, "Now are we the sons of God," and as we accept Christ, Truth, we find we were ever God's children.
My physical healing seemed slow to mortal sense, as my fear was great. I had lived on drugs for years, but was quite willing to give them up after my first treatment in Christian Science, though I was a long while giving up all the little gods. If my head throbbed violently and help did not come quickly, I would resort to applications of hot water. When a practitioner pointed out to me that I was making a god of this, I said if that was so I would never use the water again for remedial purposes, and I never was tempted to. Yielding up the human for the divine will brought my healing, and I have learned that when our healing is slow there is always a step which we are not quite willing to take.
I had always suffered much from throat trouble and toothache, and had acquired the habit of eating peppermints. I did not see that I was leaning on them for aid, but this mistake was lovingly pointed out to me, and when I gave up the error my throat and teeth were relieved, and the lesson, "Thou shalt have no other gods before me," was again learned. I mention these things because they may help some one to see that reliance upon the little gods may hinder more subtly than the others, because seemingly less important to human sense. My husband has been healed of rheumatism in Christian Science, also of the smoking habit, and our little girl knows no other remedy than this truth, which does set free.
