With reference to the letter of "A Mere Clergyman,"...

The Bournemouth (England) Echo

With reference to the letter of "A Mere Clergyman," headed "The Recent Christian Science Lecture," may I point out that the teachings of Christian Science as to the nature of mind and of matter, being based on the gospels, are spiritual. These teachings are epitomized in the words of Christ Jesus: "It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing." In the understanding and practical application of that profound statement lies all that Christian Science has to offer to the world today. In the Palestine of long ago human ignorance as to mind and matter did not prevent the Master from defining life eternal as knowledge of the only true God and of His Christ. Why then should a similar ignorance in modern schools of research deter Christians from reiterating this definition and striving to prove it, as Jesus did, with "signs following"?

Should not the words and works of him who claimed to be the "light of the world" be the accepted standard of all his disciples? Undisturbed by the failure or achievement of mere human wisdom, remembering that "the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God," Christian Scientists endeavor to obey the unequivocal command, "Heal the sick." Humbly and thankfully they declare, as Jesus did, "The Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works." Now, as then, the Father's works need no material agent, no hypnotic influence, no speculative theory, to sustain them. True health is holiness; and that "intimately vital relation of religion to health" referred to by your correspondent is established in the perpetual application of the fact that "that which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit."

Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, teaches mankind how to use the truth that overcame sin, disease, and death on the hills of Galilee nineteen hundred years ago. On page 289 of her book "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" she writes: "The belief that life and sensation are in the body should be overcome by the understanding of what constitutes man as the image of God. Then Spirit will have overcome the flesh."
