In 1908, as a result of a cold, I was taken with a rheumatic affection in the left side of the body. Failure on my part to give this condition proper attention led to its developing into a chronic trouble, which in 1910 manifested itself so severely that I became incapacitated for work. I was laid up the greater part of the time, and had a hypodermic administered once in a while, which relieved me of the pain temporarily. At the end of January, 1911, I seemed to be restored. In May, however, there was a relapse, and the symptoms this time manifested themselves far more acutely. My condition grew so serious that it became difficult for me to walk even a few minutes with the aid of a stick.

A cure at a watering place and massage seemed to help, but in September I had another severe relapse, this time accompanied by cramps in the left leg and in the muscles of the back. Even my physician was astonished at the intensity and malignant nature of the trouble. An X-ray examination and the consultation of two other physicians confirmed the correctness of the first diagnosis. As the many remedies used in such cases held out no promise of a cure, but at best only relief, I turned to Christian Science and asked a practitioner with whom I was acquainted for treatment, which was taken up, the immediate effect being that I was able to sleep without an opiate. A few days later I went out feeling entirely able to work, and since then have steadily attended to my professional duties. In the beginning of 1912 I had two relapses, which however were overcome after a short period of treatment without interruption of my duties. I am enjoying as good health as in former times, and I gratefully acknowledge the physical benefits received through Christian Science, as well as its effects in other directions which I have had the privilege of observing.
