More and more I realize the need of constant spiritual preparedness on the part of every earnest seeker after Truth, which is indeed our "shield and buckler." Especially is this true in my own case, located as I am in a hospital town containing a state hosiptal for the insane, a noted surgical hospital, and also one of the largest clinic buildings in the world, into which pours, from practically every train, sick, suffering humanity, vainly searching for health.

Several years ago I too was a hopeless, wretched invalid, going to bed each night with the prayer that I might never waken. A hospital operation, and the kind ministrations of husband, children, and physicians, had been impotent to heal me. My ailments were legion, and I was sometimes tempted to believe them more formidable than the seven devils which Jesus cast out. At this juncture Christian Science again came into my life, a dear sister having tried to interest me in it two years prior to this but the seed had fallen on stony ground. While in Minneapolis in July, 1908, I went with a friend to a Christian Science Wednesday evening meeting and listened to the testimonies of healing. The bright faces were a revelation to me, and I said, "Oh, could I ever hope to have a face like that?" The loving affirmative answer I doubted; however, as there was nothing to lose and everything to gain, I decided to see if Christian Science as a healing agency could do what medicine, massage, electricity, and so on, had utterly failed to do.

My satchel full of medicine was emptied, and in less than three days, through the help of a practitioner, I was healed of a chronic bowel trouble which had been pronounced incurable by the last attending physician. In less than a month I could sit down naturally, whereas for two years I had been obliged to use an inflated rubber cushion. I immediately began to eat, having been practically starved; extreme nervous troubles soon lessened, and medical laws began to weaken. Had I been a doubting Thomas looking for a sign, I could not have doubted after the first month.
