As a part of his discussion that "there is no new thing...

Valparaiso (Ind.) Vidette

As a part of his discussion that "there is no new thing under the sun," in the baccalaureate sermon reported in your paper recently, a clergyman said, "Christian Science harks back to Berkeley, farther back to India, farther back to the realms of the past." This is not the first time that clergymen and other opponents of Christian Science have tried to claim that its teachings are derived from the philosophy of the person named, or from some other philosopher, or that it is taken from some of the Hindu philosophies, while the fact is that Christian Science is based directly on the teachings of Christ Jesus. It will be seen, then, that our critic was partially right when he said that Christian Science is not new, but was very much mistaken when he attempted to account for its origin.

The first religious tenet of Christian Science, as found on page 497 of the Christian Science text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, reads: "As adherents of Truth, we take the inspired Word of the Bible as our sufficient guide to eternal Life," and any one who will study this book dispassionately will find that this is exactly true. Christian Science is demonstrably the religion established by the Master; and that it is all its name implies may be determined by testing it with the test given by the Master, "By their fruits ye shall know them."

In all parts of the world and among all classes of people Christian Science is healing the sick, reforming the sinner, and making the world better; and since it is doing this in exactly the way that Christ Jesus commanded, we are perfectly right in our insistence that it is the highest form of Christianity. Its critics may try to detract from it in every conceivable way, but the fact is that Christian Science is marching gloriously on in its mission of uplifting humanity through preaching the gospel and healing the sick, exactly as did primitive Christianity.
