Among the Churches

Current Notes

Colorado .—A general survey of conditions to May 1 shows continued and steady progress of the Christian Science movement throughout Colorado. This progress is to be noted in the improved attitude of the public thought as much perhaps as in the spiritual growth of the Christian Scientists and its resultant outward manifestations. The church at Trinidad and the society at Rocky Ford completed and dedicated their church edifices during the past six months. A better understanding of our literature, its nature and purpose, is being gained, and this is bringing forth increased and more efficient activity in the distribution work. It has been the privilege of this office to render assistance to that end. It is significant that a larger and truer appreciation of the distribution work is accompanied by improved conditions in other church activities.

Since the first of last November 494 Sentinels, 22 Journals, 6 Herolds, and 2845 Monitors have been distributed through this office, and in addition several subscriptions and renewals of periodicals and copies of Mrs. Eddy's writings have been furnished to institutions not otherwise provided. Other distribution activities included 1310 copies of Colorado newspapers containing Christian Science lectures, letters written by the committee on publication, and articles of legislative interest; 648 circular letters and 433 copies of Senator Work's speech. The Trustees under the Will of Mary Baker Eddy are donating Christian Science literature to public libraries, libraries of universities, colleges, and normal schools, also to federal and state prisons and reformatories, upon condition that the libraries will accept such literature, properly catalogue it, and make it available to all who have access to these libraries. By this means, during the past six months four additional libraries have been furnished with books, and there have been 84 subscriptions and renewals of periodicals.—Committee on Publication.

Far Rockaway, N. Y.—Literature distributed from April, 1916, through February, 1917, was as follows: 4 copies of Science and Health, 1 Concordance to Science and Health, 1705 Sentinels, 254 Journals, 124 Herolds, 14,731 Monitors, 99 Quarterlies, 185 pamphlets, and 600 newspapers containing lecture reports and reprinted articles from our periodicals. This literature has been placed in public libraries, country and social clubs, barber shops, post offices, coast guard stations, lumber yard and sawmill, restaurants, hair dressing parlors, fire houses, police stations, hotels and boarding houses, railway stations, dental offices, telephone companies, express offices, the local court house, private schools, and embroidery works. Many expressions of appreciation have come to us, and there has been an increase of attendance at our services.
