Our critic takes exception to Mrs. Eddy's repudiation of miracles as supernatural, a position evidently adopted by scholasticism to hide the inability to perform them. Mrs. Eddy says, "Christian marvels (and marvel is the simple meaning of the Greek word rendered miracle in the New Testament) will be misunderstood and misused by many, until the glorious Principle of these marvels is gained" (Science and Health, p. 474). She claims that the works of Jesus were divinely natural, therefore possible to every man, woman, and child who follows him understandingly, and like the Master she fortified her teaching by demonstration.

"Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy is indeed a "Key to the Scriptures," unlocking its rich treasures of Spirit. Like the Master's teachings, it is inspired by Spirit and requires spiritual understanding to interpret it; for is it not "the spirit that quickeneth"? To the truth seekers—and in their ranks are ministers as well as laymen—whom creed and profession have turned empty away, there are no inconsistencies in this text-book, when studied daily in connection with the Bible; and he only who is proving this is competent to judge.

It is gratifying to recognize that our friend can see that "Christian Scientists teach one great truth, the doctrine of love." On the other hand, it is to be regretted that he cannot see and that the churches have not fully awakened to the understanding that in reality Love is the only doctrine, as it was the doctrine that Christ Jesus taught, preached, and practised, and the doctrine that the beloved disciple St. John spoke of when he said, "He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love."
