Danville (Ind.) Gazette
In the city of Danville and vicinity many proofs have been given of the efficacy of Christian Science to heal the sick and reform the sinner, and it is doubtful if there is a community within the bounds of civilization of which this same thing could not be said. It is universally true also that those denominated Christian Scientists are intelligent, law abiding citizens; or, as it is more often expressed, Christian Science has been embraced by many of our best people.
Since the followers of Mrs. Eddy are numbered by the millions, and consist of thinking, responsible people to whom Christian Science has brought better morals, better health, and a higher citizenship, is it reasonable to suppose that they are deluded in the manner that our revivalist critic would have us believe? Is it reasonable to suppose that many physicians would abandon their practice, that a large number of ministers would give up the ministry in the older churches, and professional men sacrifice public careers to devote their lives to the promulgation of Christian Science, if the statements made by this impassioned speaker were true? Is it reasonable to suppose that multitudes of our best people have given themselves over to the furtherance of a movement that would be wholly unworthy of them? I want to answer with a very definite no.
Such attacks by the clergy are always followed by a goodly portion of people wanting to know the actual facts, and when they realize that the critic employs methods that are unbelievable in a Christian minister, they pursue their investigation to the point of knowing to a certainty that Mrs. Eddy is one of the world's greatest benefactors, and that she is so regarded by thinking and well informed people in all walks of life; also that Christian Science is, to state it moderately, in the front ranks of the leading movements for the uplift of mankind.
