Your kindly reference to Christian Scientists in your editorial...

Your kindly reference to Christian Scientists in your editorial on "Grippe and Religion" may have led some of your readers to ask themselves what the Christian Scientist does to protect himself for instance, from a grippe epidemic. For their benefit I would like to explain that the protection comes, not from any unreasoning belief or mere human denial of disease, but from the understanding of how divine intelligence expresses itself in right activity. As one turns sincerely to and sees something of the law of divine intelligence, he becomes conscious that this law is operative for him, and begins therefore really to experience more of orderly and intelligent activity in place of either seeming inactivity or overaction. Hence he remains free because, knowing that the divine consciousness which manifests itself in orderly activity is the only true consciousness, he has refused to accept as consciousness any suggestion of the opposite.

The practice of Christian Science is thus entirely metaphysical, and of course radically different from other systems which, whether they admit it or not, rely in any way on the human mind, for help or confuse this human mind and its counterfeit sense of things with the true and unlimited consciousness which is God, continuously present and harmonious. As Mrs. Eddy says on page 67 of Science and Health, "Spiritual, not corporeal, consciousness is needed."
