I am very thankful for what Christian Science has done for me. On the sixteenth day of November, 1912, I had to leave my work on account of what seemed to be backache. That evening I called on my doctor, and after an examination the trouble was pronounced sciatic rheumatism. He treated me for some time, but instead of getting better I grew worse, so changed doctors. The next one said I had hip disease, but as his treatment met with no better results, after nine weeks I changed again. The new doctor sent me to a hospital to have an X-ray picture taken, and after seeing the plate he decided to put me in a plaster cast from the armpits to the knees. He did not tell me what the trouble was, but told my mother it was tubercular disease of the spine.

About this time a friend lent me some Christian Science literature, including a copy of Science and Health. I started to read from the first about half of the time, as I could not lie in bed more than four hours consecutively on account of the cast. While reading one night, I came to the passage in Science and Health where it reminds us that one cannot serve two masters, both God and mammon. This must have been just what I needed, as it decided me at once. I got a knife and started to cut off the cast. It took about an hour, but I felt much better when it was off. I then had treatment from a Christian Science practitioner. The first time I called on her I was using two crutches, the next time only one, but one foot was drawn up. The next time I could walk with a cane. At the end of two weeks I decided I could treat myself, and in one week more, or three weeks from the time I first called the practitioner, I returned to work completely healed.

After I had been reading Science and Health for about a week, headaches, and a bowel difficulty with which I had been troubled for fifteen years, entirely disappeared. I have read the book through six times. For all the demonstrations I have had I am deeply grateful to Christian Science.
