My attention has just been drawn to one of your "Notes of the Day" on an American novel from which a quotation is made to the effect that Christian Science is the "special invention" of Uncle Sam and is "based upon physical benefit."

An acquaintance with the teachings of Christian Science will reveal that there is no foundation for either of these suggestions, for Christian Science lays no claim to being an invention. It is engaged in restoring primitive Christianity with "signs following," and is making it possible for the world to gain a demonstrable understanding of the gospel of the Man of Nazareth. As in his day, however, many cannot believe except for the "works' sake," for it is the physical healing alone that appeals to them; but, as Mrs. Eddy says on page 150 of Science and Health, "the mission of Christian Science now, as in the time of its earlier demonstration, is not primarily one of physical healing. Now, as then, signs and wonders are wrought in the metaphysical healing of physical disease ; but these signs are only to demonstrate its divine origin,—to attest the reality of the higher mission of the Christ-power to take away the sins of the world."
