Several years ago I was what is called a semiinvalid
Several years ago I was what is called a semiinvalid. For fifteen years, like the woman of Luke's gospel, I had spent all my living on physicians, but to no avail. An operation was said to be my only chance for recovery, but fond parents and a loving husband strongly objected to this course. Various sanitariums, hospitals, and faith cures were tried, but they brought no relief. The world seemed a blank, and many days I left the house hoping never to return.
I had prayed and prayed to a God whom I loved, and wondered why He did not hear my prayer, when lo, one day the subject of Christian Science was broached, and my husband, who that day had conversed with a friend concerning it, remarked to me that it must be a wonderful religion. He then told me of the healings that had taken place in this friend's family through its teaching, and I listened in awe; but not once did the thought occur to me that I might be healed or benefited physically. I requested some literature, and found each article referred to "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. This book, as I learned, contained the fundamental teaching of Christian Science, so a copy of it was procured.
The first chapter revealed to me a God who is Love, infinite good, a God who never created disease and knew nothing of evil or discord. Then came the great truth that if He did not know discord, it was not anything at all, for only that which He created was good and would stand forever. It developed that hitherto I had not prayed to God at all, for the God that Science and Health revealed was not known to me, so I prayed for understanding. Day by day the rejection of everything unlike God proved a fruitful occupation for a few weeks later I found God.
