In September, 1911, I was healed of the liquor habit and attendant evils through Christian Science treatment, and in a manner that left no doubt of the activity of some power at that time unknown to me. of In order to discover by what means the healing had been effected, I began to read Science and Health, and read it through at the rate of once a month for nearly a year, at first without any comprehension of its contents except an occasional glimmer of the truth here and there. As the reading continued, however, some understanding of the book began to unfold to me.
During this period a number of treatments for various mental and physical inharmonies were given me, and one by one these conditions disappeared. Among the ailments healed were chronic irritability, despondency, and extreme selfishness, while rheumatism, neuralgia, malaria, and liver trouble likewise yielded to the power of Truth. I have learned that it is not the extent of one's knowledge of Christian Science that counts, but how much one puts into practice. At first it was not clear to me why I should be "grateful for the good already received" (Science and Health, p. 3), if all good was mine by inheritance, until I learned that real gratitude is a spiritual state of mind, or having "the mind of Christ."
My wife and children, my father and one sister, have all been healed through the application of Christian Science as a result of the healing that came to me, and my home has been transformed from a state of misery to one of peace and happiness. The Sentinel, Journal, and Monitor have been constant helps, and my prayer is that as this testimony goes out, in and through the channel which love and wisdom has provided, the evidence of my sufficient reason for being grateful may help and encourage others, even as I have been helped and encouraged.
