The writers in two published letters disagree with a Christian Science lecturer who in the course of his address made the statement that "Jesus never claimed to be God." Had these friends read a full text of the lecture I am sure they would not have been led to believe that Christian Scientists deny the divinity of the Christ. There are no people on earth who believe more unqualifiedly in the divinity of the Christ than do Christian Scientists. They, however, apply the name Jesus to him who was born in Bethlehem and crucified on Calvary. In other words, the name Jesus is applied to the human nature of Christ Jesus, which was derived from his mother Mary. When referring to this nature the Master repeatedly spoke of himself as "the Son of man." Christian Scientists apply the name or title Christ to the divine nature which Christ Jesus derived from God and which is coexistent and coeternal with God. When alluding to his divine nature our Saviour spoke of himself as "the Son of God."

Christian Scientists believe, in accord with the teachings of the Scriptures, that the human nature, or the man Jesus, is not God, but they do not thereby deny the divinity of the Christ. To them the Son and the Father cannot be identical—the Son of God cannot be his own Father. This is indicated in the Master's statements, "My Father is greater than I," and "I can of mine own self do nothing." All of the Scriptural quotations, therefore, cited in the letters of these correspondents are accepted without question by Christian Scientists.
