It was in the fall of 1912 that I first heard of Christian Science
It was in the fall of 1912 that I first heard of Christian Science. I was going to live with a lady five miles distant who wanted some one to help her and to be with her when her husband went away on his business trips. The day before leaving home my father told me that she was a Christian Scientist, and that I should not have anything to do with Mrs. Eddy's teachings, as he had no faith in them. I stayed in my new home three days without looking into Science and Health, then curiosity got the better of me.
Not being in the habit of reading the preface of any book I turned to the first chapter, on Prayer. This was in the evening. At first I had some difficulty in reading, because of the veil that seemed to obstruct my sight. I had not read, however, to the bottom of the first page when I suddenly exclaimed, "Why, I can see." My friend did not know that my eyes were affected in any way and was surprised. I had worn glasses until the previous June, when a small, hard bunch formed on my face near the right eye. Thinking this was a boil, I did nothing for it for several weeks, but it rapidly grew large and pained me severely. Then my father placed a poultice on it, thinking to draw out the core, but it only broke and swelled as before. I became frightened and went to a physician, who increased my fright by saying I would be blind shortly if I did not go to a hospital; but this I refused to do. Then he showed me in a book a description of the tuberculous malignant growth which he said was my trouble. He also said it could not be healed.
After being healed of weak eyes through Christian Science I thought that surely the growth could be destroyed. I questioned my friend, and on learning that this could be done by the power of God, I visited a Christian Science practitioner in October. After having a few present and absent treatments I was completely healed. I have since been helped many times by reading Science and Health. I attend the Christian Science Sunday school at every opportunity, which is quite often, although it is sometimes impossible to attend both church and Sunday school, and I always come home happy and refreshed.
