Knoxville (Tenn.) Journal-Tribune
A number of tracts attacking Christian Science have recently been circulated in our city. They have been distributed in large numbers by one of the Christian denominations, not only to members of its own sect, but to those who it thought were interested in Christian Science. It is to be regretted, in this day of enlightenment, that a Christian denomination should stoop to attack those who are quietly attempting to worship God aright, and to remain silent would not be just, especially when either through ignorance or intolerance the source of these attacks misrepresents the teachings of Christian Science. Practically every quotation given in the above-mentioned tracts consists of only a few words separated from their context in such a manner as to rob them of the meaning intended to be conveyed by Mrs. Eddy. By following such methods the writings of any author may have a meaning placed upon them to suit the preconceived notions of the critic.
Through earnest and thorough study of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, in connection with the Bible, students of Christian Science have proved the truth of its teachings by healing themselves and others of sorrow, sin, and sickness, and many testimonies of the healing efficacy of Christian Science are given in the church in our city. On page 114 of "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" Mrs. Eddy writes: "Christian Science teaches: Owe no man; be temperate; abstain from alcohol and tobacco; be honest, just, and pure; cast out evil and heal the sick; in short, Do unto others as ye would have others do to you." When all the world lives according to this rule, as all Christian Scientists are striving to do, what more can be asked or required?
