Sioux City (Iowa) Tribune
In a recent sermon delivered in your city, the Rev. Mr.—pays his respects to Christian Science and other teachings which differ from the so-called orthodox theological view-point. He assails the teaching of Mrs. Eddy as lacking in the knowledge of correct theology. How true it is that history is continually repeating itself! The above accusation was repeatedly made against Christ Jesus and his disciples by the high priest and those in ecclesiastical authority. The history of the Christian religion from the time of Jesus to the present is replete with instances of the persecution of individuals who have dared to think for themselves. Those who arbitraily claimed to possess and to practise correct theological teachings, have been the persecutors. At the present time there are more than one hundred and fifty different varieties of theology, all of which claim to be based upon the Christian religion.
Just why our clerical critic should assume that his particular brand is the "correct" one, to the exclusion of those teachings which he attacks,is not very clear. If the life and exampel of Christ Jesus is the criterion, and we naturally assume that it is, the question at once occurs, Why omit from theology that which Jesus gave as positive proof of one's Christianity when he stated: "And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover"?
The woman mentioned in the Bible, to whom the critic refers, who had "suffered many things of many physicians," was healed through the spiritual understanding possessed by Jesus. Likewise hundreds of thousands of people, who found themselves in the same condition, have found surcease from their sufferings through Christian Science. They have gained happiness, health, and harmony, because they, too, have touched the "hem of Christ's robe" (Science and Health, p. 569), in its spiritual significance, and have learned that the same Christ, Truth, which heals and saves, and which Jesus demonstrated so thoroughly, is with us today, accomplishing its healing mission.
