Among the Churches
Current Notes
Gary, Ind. —The advent of Gary's handsome playhouse as a place of worship was marked yesterday [March 1] in its use for the first time by the congregation of the Christian Science church, First Church of Christ, Scientist, Starting five years ago with a little band of eight members, the local organization has kept pace with the growth of the city of their adoption. Beginning in a room of the Victoria Hotel, they have been forced to move repeatedly in order to accommodate the ever-increasing number of attendants,—first to rooms on Broadway near Seventh avenue, then to others on Fifth avenue, then to a store-room at 608 Massachusetts street, followed by the move two years ago to a double storeroom at 612 on the same street, and this last change to the theater, where the congregation will probably remain until they can have permanent quarters in a church edifice of their own.—Gary Post.
Lima, Ohio.—Second Church of Christ, Scientist, recently moved into their own church home at 545 West High street. The lot contains two houses, and for the present the main part of the larger house has been remodeled for use as a church-room. This marks progress and achievement for this organization, as Second Church was formed and received its charter only a little over a year ago.—The Lima Daily News.
New Orleans, La.—First Church of Christ, Scientist, will hold the opening services in its new edifice, at Nashville avenue and Garfield street, Sunday morning [April 12]. The entire cost of the structure, including the land, was fifty-five thousand dollars. A large balcony seats one hundred and fifty persons, while the auditorium seats about five hundred.—Times-Democrat.
