[Written for the Sentinel]

The Christ-idea

Not only to a few
Lone shepherds of the field
The night with glory shone,
The heavenly anthem pealed;
Not only to one age
That peace on earth, good will;
Not only to one race
Was Christ born to fulfil.

Is there no darkness now,
No need of peace on earth?
Is there no sunken sense
That waits a Saviour's birth?
Is there no ear to list
Truth's gentle, sweet appeal?
No sinful now to save,
No suffering to heal?

But there are those who watch,
As Jesus taught, and pray,
Who keep faith's lamp alight,
And then await the day;
And on these longing eyes
Shall break the Christmas morn,
And in each waiting heart
The saving Christ be born.
