Signs Spiritual

Our work in Christian Science should be governed by divine Principle, and every treatment should so rise above material conditions that we consciously enter into the kingdom of heaven, where the peace and health sought for are inevitably found. Yet how often do we allow ourselves to become doubting Thomases, and look for a sign, some material evidence that our work is done! Even when some manifestation appears, we often interpret it materially instead of taking it in its true significance.

A great lesson along this line came to me some time ago. My baby, twenty months old, was taken with bowel trouble. I immediately began treatment, and while she soon manifested greater strength and normal appetite, the one discordant expression peculiar to the ailment still continued. I was much puzzled, but worked on without conscious fear. One day a lady came for help, and in presenting the truth to her, my thought was so uplifted that after she left I continued to work for her, and then took up the thought for baby.

About two in the afternoon, however, the child manifested such a condition that had I known nothing of Christian Science, fear would have completely unnerved me. It certainly looked as though the situation was most serious, and it seemed that some one else must take the case, since the human sympathy of motherhood was keeping me from doing effective work. I asked my husband to call up a practitioner, and then I went up to my room to think out the meaning of this sudden sign of discord. How could it come just after that clear and certain vision of the truth?
