The Ego God

How golden is the sunshine that coaxes out the flowers!
The sky is blue with fleecy clouds, the birds sing in the bowers,
While children laugh in pure delight and love the happy hours:
Oh, life is blooming everywhere, in gleams and glimpses glad and fair;
We see it in its varied sheen, but back of all is Life unseen,
And Life itself is God.

How reverence we the honest heart that dares to stand for right!
Our land is full of monuments to liberty and light;
We've cherished aye the Christ-idea, throughout the world's long night:
Now, truth is speaking everywhere in hieroglyphics grand and fair;
We know it through God's changeless laws, but back of all is Truth the cause,
And Truth itself is God.

How tender is the mother-love that teaches babes to stand;
How comforting the comradeship that prospers hand in hand!
How holy is the unselfed heart that points to "promised land"!
Yes, love is glowing everywhere, in kindly deeds and accents fair;
We feel love's hallowing touch entwine, but back of all is Love divine,
For Love itself is God.
