Beset on all sides with the doubts and fears of mortal...
Beset on all sides with the doubts and fears of mortal existence, Christian Science found me physically and mentally in a most unhealthy state, so that I was on the verge of nervous breakdown. I was a victim of stomach and catarrhal trouble, also of violent headaches, and was unable to read or work comfortably without the aid of glasses. During the winter months I was subject to severe coughs and colds. I also experienced much mental suffering, largely due to my seeming inability to express my thoughts and so become successful in the work I had chosen to do. I was regarded as a failure, a dependent, as being unable to find my place in the world. In my own consciousness, however, I knew I was not a failure, and I prayed earnestly to be shown the way to success, to gain the power to prove myself to the world; and this prayer was answered.
As Christian Science has come to many struggling alone in the darkness of human suffering, so it came to me, and with its message of Truth and Love lighting the way, it led me out of the gloom into the understanding of Life, God, the dawn of eternal day. Healing came, all things were changed, and I can now truthfully say that "the former things are passed away," God's words, "Behold, I make all things new," have been demonstrated to me, and I have come into man's rightful heritage of health, happiness, and present success.
The knowledge that "I can of mine own self do nothing," but that with God lies the power which enables me to demonstrate success in all my undertakings, is much to me. Christian Science to me is one with the teachings of the Master, a religion of Love, of God the impartial Father, who forgiveth all our iniquities and healeth all our diseases. The overflowing gratitude I feel for all blessings that have come to me through Christian Science I wish to express in watchfulness, work, and prayer,—"the prayer of fervent desire for growth in grace, expressed in patience, meekness, love, and good deeds" (Science and Health, p. 4). Ingeborg Christensen, Chicago, Ill.
