The remarkable growth of Christian Science in every part...

The Hartford (Mich.) Day Spring

The remarkable growth of Christian Science in every part of the world is causing comment among all classes of people. The universal inquiry is, "What is it?" Out of this mass of inquiries have come many erroneous impressions about Christian Science from those who have given opinions on the subject rather than facts based upon investigation. The human family in all ages has sought for deliverance from disease, from sin and its consequences, and from all other things that cause unhappiness; so that anything that will heal disease, destroy sin, and bring happiness, is certainly worthy of investigation, for every human being wants to have health, to be free from unhappiness, and to be contented.

Christian Science does all these things. There are many happy persons making themselves useful in the world today, who will bear positive testimony as to the truth of the foregoing statement. Most of these persons will tell you that when they came into Christian Science they had either been given up by physicians or had reached the depths of despair in sin or in poverty. They will all testify that there was no material means for their deliverance, because they had tried all material means without result; but as soon as they sought Christian Science they experienced in increasing measure what they had been seeking for,—either health, or relief from many other forms of unhappiness. Can we reasonably deny the testimony of such responsible witness clothed and in their right minds? If one had a case in court, would he not feel secure in the issue if he had many reliable witnesses who would come forward and all, individually, tell the same facts in relation to his case?

God, as revealed in the Bible, and as explained by Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, is "the great I AM; the all-knowing, all-seeing, all-acting, all-wise, all-loving, and eternal; Principle; Mind; Soul; Spirit; Life; Truth; Love; all substance; intelligence" (Science and Health, p. 587). Being Spirit, He is incorporeal, and fills all space. As He fills all space, He is ever present; and no matter where you may be, He is there. If we ascribe to God personality, or think of Him as a person, we immediately limit Him, because a personality is limited and cannot fill all space. Likewise, by ascribing to Him personality, we become in a measure idolaters, and prayers to such a God are not answered. Christian Science reveals that God is Spirit, and that man is His image and likeness. God being spiritual, man as His image and likeness must be and is spiritual. So you see that God can be apprehended only spiritually, never materially. Christian Science teaches that there is one omnipotent God. To acknowledge any other power is to dishonor Him. It bases its faith on the first chapter of Genesis, where we are told that God made all that was made, and "it was very good." Therefore, anything that claims existence, unless it is good, is a seeming and not a reality, because God made all, and all good. The truths of Christian Science, being eternal, are not new. They have always been and always will be. Christ Jesus the Wayshower practised them, and he healed the sick by the selfsame Principle. Every Christian Scientist acknowledges "one supreme and infinite God," and acknowledges "His Son, one Christ; the Holy Ghost or divine Comforter;" acknowledges "Jesus' atonement as the evidence of divine, efficacious Love, unfolding man's unity with God through Christ Jesus the Way-shower" (Science and Health, p. 497).
