[Written for the Sentinel]

Autumn Time

The melodies of Love resound today
O'er hill and vale and the maturing field;
They tell old truths, e'en of glad beauty's sway,
And herald loud the coming of the yield.

The children of the woods parade today
In royal vestments and in dress divine,—
Enduring tones of brown and tranquil gray,
With deep greens dipped in richest crimson wine.

The eyes of heaven are mirrored clearer now,
In sparkling roughs and calms of sapphire hue;
The brooks' cool waters are made sweeter now,
For they are nourished by celestial dew.

The melodies of God resound sincere
In grateful hearts, at home, in lane and street;
The harvests white of love and light appear,
And all kneel meekly at the Master's feet.
