Knowing the Truth

One of the first things realized by those who have come to Christian Science for healing, is that in the process of being healed they have been freed from a great weight of fear which has been as a millstone about their necks. Almost thirty years ago, Mrs. Eddy in writing of the prevalence of fear said, "Looking over the newspapers of the day, one naturally reflects that it is dangerous to live, so loaded with disease seems the very air" (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 7). In the years that have passed since these words were written, the discussion of so-called "health conservation," the exploitation of new medical theories, and the publication in the news-papers of articles on the subject of how to keep well, have largely added to the perils of the day.

All these things, thought put forward in the press ostensibly for the public good, have catered to the belief that disease is a reality, that it proceeds upon certain well-defined lines and can be cured or checked only through certain material processes and by the administering of certain material remedies. If these material remedies fail, then the case is supposed to be past help. Fortunately for an ever increasing number of people, Christian Science, in direct opposition to this belief, has healed thousands of persons who had been left without hope, from the medical point of view. What is more, Christian Science in restoring them to health has destroyed their fears, not only of disease, but also of all kinds of things, named and nameless, which have interfered with their freedom in all their business, social, and religious activities.

Probably no one who has experienced this healing in Christian Science can look back upon his former experience without wondering how he could have been held in such utter bondage to a nameless fear, or how he could have given such implicit allegiance to something of which he was not conscious. How many of these people would have admitted in the old days that they were lacking in moral courage or that they were ignorant of that truth of which Jesus said, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free"? Almost every one will agree, as a general proposition, that ignorance and fear are copartners, and many will agree—still as a general proposition—that ignorance is the cause of fear; but never since the early days of Christianity until the revelation of Christian Science through the inspired thought of Mrs. Eddy, has the knowing of the truth made men free from both sickness and fear.
