The Lectures

H. J. Deards, in introducing Virgil O. Strickler, who spoke on Christian Science at the Opera House, said in part:—

I trust you will pardon me if I make a few personal remarks in regard to how I became interested in Christian Science. As a young man I was very active in church work, especially in Christian Endeavor and the Sunday school. When I was about eighteen years of age, I was elected superintendent of a Sunday school in Wisconsin, which position I held for seven years. As I stood looking into the faces of the children as they took their places in the Sunday school room, just as I stand before you tonight looking into your faces, quite often I found myself asking the questions: "What am I doing for these little children? In what way am I helping them in their daily life? How can I help them to meet their every-day problems?" The only answer I could give was that I was trying to help them live clean, pure lives, and telling them about a heaven hereafter.

A few years later I moved to Des Moines, and was again at the head of a Sunday school. Unconsciously I asked the same questions as before, and I assure you the answer was very unsatisfactory. Then my attention was called to Christian Scientists. When I use that term, I do not mean those who simply bear the name, but those who are living the teachings of Christian Science, whose faces reflect divine Love. As I watched them, as I drew closer to them, I found that they had a religion not only for Sunday morning but for every day in the week. They got great pleasure out of talking about it, and received help from it in every condition of life.
