[Written for the Sentinel]

The Ever-presence

     OPEN thy hands,
Clenched in despair's petition—
     Can thy demands
Exceed the fulness of His love's fruition
     In whom creation stands?

     Only believe!
The fairest, fullest blessing
     Thou canst receive,
Is ever that which is most closely pressing,
     Waiting till thou perceive.

     Cease, then, to plead,
And in glad recognition
     The answer heed.
Make thou on Love eternal requisition
     For every human need.

     Arise and shine!
Beholding His reflection,
     Thy will resign—
See, the dream vanishes, and all perfection
     Appears in Love divine!
