I gladly send my contribution in regard to the regenerating...
I gladly send my contribution in regard to the regenerating and healing power of Christian Science. I know that it is of God, for it has healed me. From childhood I was troubled with a weak stomach; hardly anything I ate seemed to agree with me. Mother would give different kinds of medicine to relieve me, and some of the time I would feel real well; them I would have another attack, and it was laid to some kind of food I had eaten. I was always taking medicine. After I grew to womanhood, whenever I had a severe spell I would go to a physician for relief. I did so until I got discouraged and thought there was no cure for me, so I quit taking so much medicine. I soon became subject to bad spells which affected my heart. I went to a doctor about it, and he said that the trouble was caused by my stomach. He gave me medicine, but did not cure me.
In the winter of 1909 I was getting much reduced in flesh and weak, for I could not eat enough to sustain me. I could not lie down at night because it affected my heart, and so we sent back East to a heart specialist, who relieved me at first; but I kept on growing weaker and thinner, till my husband wanted me to have a home doctor. We got one of the best physicians and surgeons in Olympia, Wash., who gave me a thorough examination. He said he could do nothing for the heart, because if he gave me anything to relieve that, it would hurt the stomach, and vice versa. All hope was gone, and I made ready to pass from this stage of action to the great beyond.
At this time we got a letter from my husband's sister-in-law, asking why we did not try Christian Science. We knew nothing of this teaching, having never read the text-book, but my husband wanted me to try it. There was a small society in Olympia, and I asked him one Sunday morning to go there and see if he could buy the text-book. He did so, and brought home "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" and gave it to me; then he went out. I opened the book at the Preface, and began to read: "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, today is big with blessings" (p. vii). Those were soothing and strengthening words to me. I read on and on, and before I got through reading the chapter on Prayer, unutterable peace seemed to permeate my whole being. My heart quieted, and I felt as though I was being born again; such a spiritual uplift I never experienced before. I knew that I had found the panacea for all disease, and I said, "Man's extremity is God's opportunity." I kept right on reading till bedtime. I took no medicine that night, and awoke with a very bad spell with my heart. Then I reached for the medicine, but drew my hand back and said, "Get thee behind me, Satan." I told my husband that I was being healed, and in three days I went to the table and ate what the rest did. I have eaten normally ever since, and have done my own work.
