THE LECTURES
The new Christian Science church building was taxed to the limit of its capacity by an audience which evidenced great interest in the lecture on Christian Science delivered by Clarence C. Eaton. The lecturer was introduced by Robert Nimmo, Jr., who said in part,—
In reading the four gospels, we are impressed by the numerous accounts of the healing of the sick by Jesus. We read in the book of Acts that Jesus' followers continued this healing ministry after his ascension, and from historical records we learn that they practised and performed the works of divine healing for about three hundred years after that event; then for sixteen hundred years, except in some isolated instances, it seems this power was lost, the Saviour's command to heal the sick was ignored and finally forgotten. Preaching still continued, but it was not the kind that was pregnant with power. A good deal of conjecture has been indulged in as to why the ability to heal the sick seemed lost during all these years—it must have been that the gospel of Christ is what heals and transforms. Jesus said: "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." St. Paul writes, "My speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power." When Peter was accosted by the cripple, soliciting alms, he said, "Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk." This also was a demonstration of the power of Spirit, God, to heal through man, having that Mind in him "which was also in Christ Jesus;" but the time came when the things of the Spirit were lost sight of and material things were more highly prized. His self-styled followers could no longer say, "Silver and gold have I none;" neither could they say to the lame man, "Rise up and walk." The pursuit and acquisition of wealth became of first moment, whereas the Bible says, "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you."
As foretold in Revelation, the healing truth, the true gospel of Christ in all its comprehensiveness and power, has again been restored to the world through the awakened spirituality and self-abnegation of a good woman, Mary Baker Eddy, who has given to the world in the Christian Science text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," a complete and demonstrable exposition of the Science of divine Mind, which brings to the receptive heart the peace of God; and this truth, as presented by our Leader, is fast proving to the world that it is the gospel as taught by Jesus. We who have experienced its blessings in relief from physical ills, in the destruction of sin with its subsequent discordant conditions, can testify to its truth because of the very works which it does.—Venice Vanguard.
