TIME VS. OPPORTUNITY
How often we say and hear it said, "I have no time;" or, "I should like to read and study more, but I have no time," or, "If I had time I should like to write for our periodicals." Not long ago, as I climbed the hill on my daily morning walk, a breezy little thought joined me by the way and said: "Why not speak the truth, and say that there is no time to fear or to fret, to worry or to hurry, no time for discouragement, self-pity, doubt, criticism, or covetousness; no time for thoughts of limitation; in fact, no time to forget the truth of being and remember error; but that there is opportunity here and now, in every place and condition, to trust in infinite good, to be friendly and helpful, to cooperate in the welfare of others, to practise the golden rule?"
I was deeply grateful for this morning message, and later I read in Science and Health (p. 598), that "time is a mortal thought, ... Eternity is God's measurement of Soul-filled years." Time is a mortal concept, eternity is here and now in which to think the thoughts of God. Time always brings a sense of limitation, and our beloved Leader assures us that it is "no part of eternity" (p. 468). Then we may challenge every negative "I have not" which comes to our thought, and replace it with the positive "I have all things, and can do all things through Christ, Truth." We all have opportunites, wherever we may be, to reflect God's thought, and no sense of limitation as to time can deprive us of this divine right.
Opportunity is perpetual, the eternal now! It is not only our privilege to eliminate the thought of time and replace it with opportunity, but it is vital to our salvation. Who would not gladly exchange the mortal sense of time for a sense of endless opportunity to grow in grace; to trust, to love, and to work? Who would not give up the limited for the unlimited, the evil for the good, and be forever grateful to the Discoverer of Christian Science for pointing out this way to life, prosperity, and peace?
