[Written for the Sentinel.]

SONG OF SUMMER

Wind in the waterways rippling to song,
wind thro' the willow wands rushing along,
wind in the clouds above, tossing the rain,
wind in the world abroad, hark ! the refrain—
                  Evil is impotent,
                       Sorrow a dream,
                  Good is omnipotent,
                       Love is supreme.

Sun on the meadow-lands lighting the grass,
Sun in the buttercups, mass upon mass,
Sun on the window-panes glitters and gleams,
Sun thro' the swaying elms, see how it streams,—
                  Evil is impotent,
                       Sorrow a dream,
                  Good is omnipotent,
                       Love is supreme.
