Some time ago a passage in a testimony in the Sentinel...

Some time ago a passage in a testimony in the Sentinel brought home to me more clearly than ever before my great debt to our beloved Leader, and seemed to explain how it was that Truth had been revealed to me in the wonderful way in which it had been some years ago. I am therefore prompted to express my gratitude through the Sentinel, in the hope that it may help another. It is now over six years since I found myself in a most grievous condition, having lost under most trying and difficult circumstances all that went to make up my happiness, these circumstances making my daily life unbearable, yet I was unable to free myself mentally or physically; that is to say, no way was open for me to change my environment. Worst of all, I knew of no power that could help me; for I could not believe that God willed suffering.

After about eighteen months of this experience I went to pay a short visit to a very dear friend, and on being left alone in the drawing-room on my arrival, my eyes fell on a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, a book which I had never before seen or even heard of. I opened it, and my attention was at once riveted by two or three statements respecting Truth. In a flash it was perfectly clear to me that I had found what I had always been looking for—the knowledge of what Truth is, and in that moment I was wholly satisfied. One statement which has remained with me always came to me then with such great light that I felt stunned, as did Saul on the road to Damascus, for it told me that the "one way to heaven, harmony," was "to know no other reality ... than good" (p. 242), whereas I had been believing only in evil, allowing evil thoughts to control me. A short time after this I returned to my home, and for six months Science and Health was my constant companion. At the end of that time I was able to get away for a long stay, and the following year found myself perfectly free in every sense of the word. Since that time very great blessings have come into my life; and above all, "the peace of God, which passeth all understanding," the knowledge that with every temptation the way of escape is provided.

In no way can I better express my gratitude to God, whose infinite love has made it possible for us to know the truth which makes free, also to our dear Leader for her faithfulness to her high trust, than by striving more and more for that Mind "which was also in Christ Jesus," that I may be enabled to give a cup of cold water to those in need.
