I began the study of Christian Science about five years...

I began the study of Christian Science about five years ago, and I was healed in a few weeks of numerous complaints, simply through reading "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, and attending the Christian Science services in this town. Since this healing I have had innumerable proofs of the power of Truth, and perhaps an account of one of them might be helpful to others.

One evening, about three years ago, in going down a step rather hurriedly I slipped and injured my ankle severely. The pain was so great that for the moment I lost all control over myself and fell heavily forward, knocking my arm and wrist against some obstruction. I soon saw that all this was due to a feeling of impatience because I had been called away from doing something in which I was interested, and I went more hurriedly than was necessary or I should have stepped down more carefully. The whole thing was very sudden and the pain acute, but I felt so conscious of the presence and power of God that I had no fear, and in a few seconds I was able to get up, although according to the physical senses it seemed impossible to put my foot to the ground. We are told in Science and Health that "the physical affirmation of disease should always be met with the mental negation" (p. 392), so I instantly met this sense of unbearable pain with the scientific statement of being. With this thought held firmly I managed to get back to the drawing-room, where my mother and a friend were waiting for me, and we went on with what we had been doing before.

For about ten minutes the pain was so severe that I had to strive very hard to overcome the inclination to faint; but as I continued to work mentally it gradually lessened, and in about half an hour, when it was time to retire, I was able to stand up and attend to several little duties that called for my attention. I must have gone up and down stairs at least four times before I was able to go to my own room, and when I got there, alone for the first time, I found that there was nothing for me to do, as all the pain had entirely disappeared from my ankle and wrist and arm; I did not feel the least bit shaken or upset, though it was less than an hour since I had had the fall. Later, when I took off my stocking. I found there was no evidence of the accident, the foot being perfectly normal.
