A Christian is one who accepts and practises the teachings of Jesus the Christ, and it would be difficult to find a body of people to whom these teachings are of greater value and importance than the Christian Scientists. Again, it is hardly accurate to give as a reason for the statement that Christian Science is not Christian the fact that Christian Scientists deny the reality of matter. Christian Scientists are not the only people who do this, although they are the only people who do so on the understanding that the creation of God, the "First Great Cause"—the only creation—cannot be other than wholly spiritual, and is, therefore, not material. Christian Science is therefore preeminently scientific.
Christian Science is not something new; it is just as old as truth itself. Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, says, in the Preface to the Christian Science text-book (p. xi), "Now, as then, these mighty works are not supernatural, but supremely natural.
