Sydenham (Eng.) Borough News
Our critic apparently thinks that Christian healing is a process of mental suggestion; but if you can suggest what is supposed to be good to a person, you can with equal certainty suggest what is evil. For this reason, mental suggestion is about the most dangerous thing in the world, and is the absolute antithesis of Christian Science. Christian Science works, if it is possible to put it in a few words, by teaching a man the spiritual or absolute law. As he learns what this law is, he is able to overcome all physical effects, whether organic or functional, as these are both alike mental in their origin. The natural science idealist admits that matter is simply the result of energy, or of mind. If this is the case, it is obvious that disease, whether organic or functional, being caused by the human mind, must be healed through divine Mind. To convince the human mind by giving it a dose of medicine is simply a clumsy method of accomplishing something which can be done by teaching it the spiritual law, or absolute truth. Jesus said, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." In the exacts proportion in which a man gains knowledge of Truth he gains the Mind of Christ, and to the extent he gains this Mind of Christ, he destroys all belief in the power or reality of evil, by proving good alone to be real. This is the way in which Christian Science healing is wrought, and it is something as absolutely antithetical to mental suggestion as anything it would be possible to conceive.
