[Written for the Sentinel.]

LOVE'S SUNSHINE

The tender flower throughout the hours of day
Uplifts its face before the sun's warm light
With grateful joy; but with the fall of night
Its petals close till comes the dawn's glad ray.
So through the hours when Truth's great light doth play
Upon the waiting heart, thought, blossoming bright,
Love's beaming joys with gladness doth invite,
That vanish swift when error seems to sway.
Love, in Thy bosom, through the night of fears
When error's phantoms threaten, may we rest!
Amid the storm Thy voice in silence cheers,
And hope doth gleam within the troubled breast,
Till darkness ceases, and as morn appears
Thy gentle sunbeams all our thought invest.
