The time for invective is past, and people today are demanding more satisfying proof of one's profession. Christian Science is supplying a long-felt need. It heals the sick; it comforts the sorrowing; it reforms the sinner, and this it accomplishes in the way that Christ Jesus taught and exemplified and required as a proof of discipleship. Christian Science is willing to be judged by the good it does for suffering humanity, and when our critic is just enough to investigate it impartially he will come to know that its works of healing and reforming are wrought in strict accord with the rules of practical Christianity set forth in the Gospels.

The speaker lamented "the awful neglect of prayerful study of the Bible." In this connection it might be said of Christian Scientists that they are perhaps the greatest Bible students of any class of people on earth. They make a daily study of the sacred writings. Our critic is mistaken when declaring the teachings of the several creeds he mentioned as being "all the same." Christian Science is unique in itself, and differs from the others in doctrine and in demonstration. Christian Science is the rediscovery of the Science of being that Christ Jesus inaugurated, practised, and left for our guidance, but which became lost to the world when the healing power ceased to accompany the professions of Christianity. It is the practical results of Christian Science, seen and felt in the lives of its followers, that is adding numbers to its ranks. They seek Christian Science for the good it brings into their lives and daily experiences. Hundreds of thousands of men, women, and children have been healed of all manner of diseases through its benign influence, and these restored and happy people are gratefully testifying their thanks unto God for His unspeakable goodness.

Our critic compares Christian Science with gnosticism, whereas there is no possible point of similarity between them. Christian Science is pure Christianity, accompanied by works of healing. Gnosticism is said to have occupied a middle ground between paganism and Christianity, and its teachings have nothing in common with the teachings of Christian Science. Christian Science does not deny the divine Principle, but on the contrary declares that God is the divine Principle of man and the universe, and that God is infinite; that He is all, and there is naught besides Him. Christian Science teaches that punishment for sin will accompany the belief in sin as long as the practice of sin is indulged, and that the punishment for sin will cease when sinning ceases.
