THE LECTURES
Frank H. Leonard lectured on Christian Science Jan. 12. He was introduced by Atty. Fred M. Harris, who said:—
I have often thought that the people who find the most fault with the new things of this life are those who know the least about them. Most of these, too, refuse to learn anything concerning these new things, because they then might find something of good in them. You will find that this exists in business as well as religious life, but it exists, perhaps, with greater strength in the latter. I am not a Christian Scientist, and I am sorry to say that I do not know much about its work or the fundamentals of its faith; but I wish to learn about them. I have long believed that the people who find the most fault with the church and its people, know nothing at all about the inner heart of the movement, and their hatred and bitterness arise more from ignorance than from any other cause.
Speaking as I do, as one outside of the church and one who does not understand it fully, it has always seemed a most wonderful thing to me. There must be something wonderful, and there is, in a faith which in the few years of its existence has drawn to it hundreds of thousands of earnest, intelligent people, who have forsaken the creeds and denominational beliefs that were born and bred within them, and who have made this new faith the foundation stone of their religious life. There must be something in a faith which impels its followers to erect the wonderful churches we see in every city, in which to teach the tenets of their religion, and which fills those churches with devoted followers at each meeting. There must be something in that faith which goes straight and deep and true into the hearts of its followers, and binds them closely together in the practice of its precepts. There must be something in it which makes possible all of the wonderful things which it has done. I do not know what it is, but even those outside of the church who will, may see that it is there; and seeing this, we must believe that all of the things which your detractors say are not true.
