AMONG THE CHURCHES

Entirely free from debt, First Church of Christ, Scientist, was dedicated on Communion Sunday, Jan. 8, 1911. The ceremony consisted simply of the announcement by the First Reader that all indebtedness had been paid off, and the reading of an address, which in part was as follows,—

It is fitting at this period to give a brief outline of the progress of Christian Science in this field from its inception. In the year 1897 two students came to Vancouver, and perceiving that the fields were "white unto the harvest," opened a Christian Science reading-room, and as one after another became interested through the reading of Science and Health and through cases of healing, services were held at their homes. The work progressed so rapidly that in September, 1898, a Christian Science society was formed, with a membership of fifteen. This society rented and furnished a hall for services and reading-rooms, and the first service was held Jan. 1, 1899. A few months later First Church of Christ, Scientist, Vancouver, was incorporated under the laws of British Columbia with sixteen charter members.

Through a steady growth in interest and attendance it became necessary in the year 1903 to move to larger quarters. Another hall was rented, which had been specially built and fitted for the accommodation of auditorium and reading-rooms. This second move was a very successful one and gave great impetus to the cause of Christian Science in our city. In August, 1906, a building fund was opened for the purpose of purchasing grounds and the building of a church home. In March of the following year the land on which this church stands was secured, and by October of the same year our present church building was completed. These, with subsequent additions and alterations, amounted to approximately thirteen thousand five hundred dollars. This amount has all been contributed as a grateful and loving tribute by those who realized that "divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need" (Science and Health, p. 494).
