Sind Gazette,

The following is an extract, from an envelope forwarded to me by the Rev.—,along with some literature on Christian Science, returned under the false impression that I had sent the same to him. On the envelope was written, "I Cor. xiii, last verse. Returned with thanks, unread. I am a firm believer in Christ and Christianity and the Holy Bible (Genesis to Revelation). 'Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.' "

I have only recently arrived from Glasgow, and while there I had the good fortune to be introduced to several Christian Scientists, and even attended their church, wherein, by the by, strangers are always welcome, the best seats being reserved for them. No private pews there. Thus, after a very long search for truth in orthodoxy, heterodoxy, and "isms," I found something sound, substantial, and sensible, that gave me food for thought, and that was that Christian Science. Meanwhile, articles kept appearing against Christian Science, not only in Glasgow, but in several English papers all over the world. On inquiry and investigation, I discovered that these articles were invariably written by people who knew little or nothing about Christian Science teachings, or who but echoed what they heard through other channels. You will observe that the Rev.—has been running on the same lines, and has gone off on a false siding of the question at issue. Please note also that he clearly states he returned the literature "with thanks, unread." In the same breath he remarks that he is a believer in everything called Christian, yet he requests me to resist the devil and he will flee from me.

How does this person know that Christian Science is of the devil, if he knows nothing of its teachings, and also refuses to read its literature? If he had done so, he would have found that Christian Science embraces the Holy Bible and everything Christian. I leave this question open for the reverend gentleman to answer, as I fear further comment on the subject would fall on deaf ears. In conclusion I say, "By their fruits ye shall know them."
