A little less than two years ago I first heard Christian...
A little less than two years ago I first heard Christian Science mentioned in other than tones of ridicule, and first learned of the existence of the book called "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." At that time I was hourly enduring mental as well as physical suffering, for I had been condemned to an early closing of my life on account of heart trouble, said to be hereditary and organic. It had been very much aggravated a year before by a shock and mental strain. Troublous conditions at home induced me to bear the burden of this knowledge alone, and when this could no longer be done on account of periods of unconsciousness, I consulted doctors other than the ones who had given me no hope, vainly believing that from some one I might get help. The dictum was, "No more than a month, probably, before you reach home." Then, in order not to worry my people, I went away to die.
In a short time I was put to bed, and while there, only half conscious, being drugged to relieve pain and coughing, I managed to write a note to a Christian Science practitioner in New York, hundreds of miles away (for I was then in Canada), one who was merely a name to me and of whose methods I was as ignorant as I am of Sanscrit; but before I knew whether she had received my letter, I was out of bed, and in a few weeks I could say that I was healed. The pain utterly disappeared. I gained in a marvelous way, and the dread and terror born of the wonderment as to what the next moment might bring to me, a fear so keen as almost to deprive me of reason during the long hours of the night,—all these were dispelled, and the peace which has been given me is indeed beyond human understanding.
My gratitude to Christian Science for physical restoration is great, but the joy and satisfaction I derive through at last learning how to know God is unspeakable. Some minor ills were overcome at the time when I was receiving treatment, and I cannot close this statement without mentioning the vigor which was given my right arm, it having been semiparalyzed by the hasty injection of a powerful drug five years ago, when I was suffering from my heart. Aside from the distress which this caused me, the inconvenience was, to say the least, trying, as I could not use my arm either in work or in play. I dragged it from doctor to doctor, and, after having it massaged, electrified, and blistered, was told to endure it as best I could, for it was in a hopeless as well as helpless condition. Now, by the aid of Christian Science, I use that arm continually and have almost forgotten its former uselessness.
