[Written for the Sentinel.]

FRIENDSHIP

It is so easy, is it not, dear friend,
To lend a hand to one sunk in the depths
Of sin and poverty. But oh, to lend
A helping hand to him whose own success
Surpasses ours,—this is a greater test
Of friendship. With Christlike humbleness,
I ask to stand as friend, O Love divine,
Both to the outcast and the man whose hand
Has wrought far greater, nobler tasks than mine.
