Christian Scientists are sometimes asked if they would...

Christian Scientists are sometimes asked if they would dare trust Christian Science in serious cases. The question was answered for me about two and a half years ago. Our youngest child—a boy of four—had seemed to be quite ill for a day or two, and a Christian Science practitioner was called. His trouble was quickly met, but I then realized that I also had been feeling badly, though I had given little thought to myself.

That night I was taken violently ill, and in the morning my husband said he must call a doctor, at least to diagnose the case. An able physician was called, and pronounced the illness a very serious attack of acute lung trouble with high temperature. In the evening the doctor called again, and said my temperature was the same. That night my suffering was extreme and in the morning indications were alarming. I then said that I must have help—that I could not go on so.

When the doctor came he said, "You are no better, and must have a trained nurse." I replied, "No, doctor; I want Christian Science alone." He was very courteous, and expressed a hope that I would recover. The Christian Science practitioner was asked to come quickly, and she sat by my bedside for about three hours. At the end of that time all pain and discomfort had gone, and instead, there was a blessed peace. I could indeed feel with the poet that "the healing of the seamless dress is by our beds of pain." I sat up in bed and ate a hearty meal. It was like coming into a peaceful harbor after a stormy voyage.
