[Written for the Sentinel.]

TIME AND ETERNITY

Out of the darkness flames the light—
A lark takes wing.
The sunset—soon a nightingale
Begins to sing
Its joy unto the evening star.
Then dark awane,
The soft faint whisperings of morn—
'Tis dawn again.

And mortal life is but a thread
Of gossamer,
On which are strung these passing days.
So frail they are,
That though the beads be jet or pearls,
It counts not much,
They crumble each and fall away
At time's quick touch.

"Without beginning, without end,"
O God, Thy years!
No stricken days, no broken threads,
No bitter tears!
The Sun of Righteousness shines forth.
Look up and see!
Earth's blight is not, and dawns for man
Eternity !
