A Christian Scientist does not ignore the claims of pain...
Marshall (Tex.) Messenger
A Christian Scientist does not ignore the claims of pain and disease, but he knows they are not a part of God's creation, which was finished and pronounced very good. He does not ignore disease, but he heals it in like manner as did Christ Jesus, and thus he relegates it to its proper rank of unreality, as that which is opposed to the realities of Spirit. A Christian Scientist recognizes the divine Mind as the only creator. He understands that right thinking and pure living externalize as health; and, per contra, that wrong thinking and impure living ultimate in disease and disaster. Thus it is that Christian Science in healing the sick first casts out evil thinking, evil desires, evil motives, and evil practices, and purifies thought, makes good active, and brings to pass the normal consequence: health (wholeness). The process is Christian and the means are purely spiritual, the way our Master taught and practised and left as a heritage to all who follow him in truth and in deed.
Our critic makes lengthy mention of Job, and says, "Had he but had a Science teacher his darkness would have all been light." In the book of Job we read that Job declared, "Ye are all physicians of no value. O that ye would altogether hold your peace! and it should be your wisdom." In another place we observe that Job had a clear conviction of mental causation, for he declared, "The thing which I greatly feared is come upon me, and that which I was afraid of is come unto me."
The claim our critic makes, that the Christian Scientists do not reverence the Bible, is as unjust as it is misleading, for it is well known to all who attend services in churches of this denomination that the Holy Bible is read by one appointed for that special purpose; and that during the week Christian Scientists everywhere have been making a study of the Bible passages that have direct reference to the Lesson-Sermon for the coming Sabbath. Christian Scientists, more than any other class of individuals on earth, make a daily and constant study of the Scriptures. Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, tells us that the Bible was her only guide and help when seeking an understanding of the lost art of Christian healing. She confined herself to the study of the sacred writings, and when the discoverey was finally made, she made complete proof through demonstration before publishing her work, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," the text-book of Christian Science which is healing thousands by its clear revelation of the omnipresence and omnipotence of God, who made man in His own image and likeness.
