A little over seven years ago, Christian Science was...
A little over seven years ago, Christian Science was brought to my notice through the healing of a friend whose case had been pronounced hopeless by the doctors. Mine, too, was seemingly a hopeless case, as my physician said I had all the ills that flesh is heir to; and I certainly suffered more than would be possible to tell. I was told I had a morbid growth which would kill me, besides numerous other serious troubles. It seemed that I was about to pass away from lung disease; then there were heart trouble, headaches, varicose veins, and several other ills which caused much suffering. I was said to have inherited the lung trouble and was never well as a child. As I grew to womanhood there were a few years that were passed very comfortably, but after reaching the age of twenty, the next twenty-five years were full of suffering, and although I had "many things of many physicians" I continued to grow worse slowly, and there seemed absolutely no hope that I would ever be any better.
After the news of my friend's healing came to me, I thought of it for several days,—what a wonderful healing it was, just like the raising of the dead,—and hope sprang up in my heart that I, too, might be healed. I secured the name of my friend's practitioner and was taken to see her, and I cannot tell what a sense of peace and rest came over me when the dear woman said, "You will be required to use no remedies, but to look to God, who will heal you." I was told that the treatment was silent prayer, and I felt perfectly satisfied and was very glad that there was no more medicine for me. Still I wondered why my prayers and those of my parents and many friends were not answered, as I could not remember a time when I did not pray. The third day after my visit to the practitioner, I began to feel as if I was being lifted up; a great happiness seemed to pervade my whole being, and my very body seemed to to be changed from an old and stiffened feeling to one of suppleness in every portion. In my joy I began to sing praises to God, and the thought came to me that the practitioner was praying for me. Upon asking her the time at which she gave me treatment that day, I found it had been the same hour of my experience. I was wonderfully healed in two weeks' treatment, and began to do my washing the third week, along with the general work for a family of five, and am still rejoicing in that health and peace which comes alone "to those leaning on the sustaining infinite" (Science and Health, Pref., p. vii.).
Through my healing my husband and children have received the same help, and are now demonstrating the healing power of Truth. For the same reason three sisters and a brother sought and found in Christian Science the same wonderful healing and inspiration. I have had many demonstrations of the power of Truth over error. I am very thankful to God for what I have received and am receiving, and to Mrs. Eddy for giving us the wonderful truths in Christian Science.
