In January, 1900, I became a member of a Christian Science...

In January, 1900, I became a member of a Christian Science household. I was at that time (and had been for several years) a member of an orthodox church, and one evening, on returning from my church, I was suddenly attacked with severe pains, which grew almost unbearable; so I called my friend, the wife in the home. A physician was summoned, but owing to stormy weather he did not come until morning. On making an examination, he decided that I had appendicitis, and as my case did not improve as rapidly as he wished he called in his son (a physician) for advice and help. They in turn called in a third physician, and an operation was decided upon, but with no absolute assurance of a recovery.

I had been in bed seventeen days when they decided that the operation should be the next day at nine o'clock. This state of affairs was a very unpleasant one for my Christian Science friend, who had cared for me according to the doctor's orders; and in looking for help and comfort for hereself and her household, during that memorable night, she took up "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, and read on page 86 these words: "Mortal mind sees what it believes as certainly as it believes what it sees." The unreality of the whole experience came to her, and I was instantly healed. The swelling or enlargement in the intestines immediately disappeared,—vanished into its native nothingness,—proving that matter has no substance. A peace such as I had never before known came to me, and I was a new creature.

In the morning at seven o'clock the physician came to see if conditions were ready for the operation. He was greatly surprised to find me well, and after calling his son, they both examined me. He said, "I could not wait, when I found she was well; so I went after my son, as I could not credit the evidence of my senses." He also told my friend, before they left, to give me no more medicine. I got up the next day, began the study of Science and Health, and have since that time had no other physician than Truth. Stomach and bowel trouble, headache, backache, rheumatism, accidents, worry, envy, discontent, and many other inharmonious conditions have been destroyed through the understanding of God, good, as given in Christian Science.
