It is more than twelve years since I first became interested in Christian Science. I did not at the time call myself really ill, but as I had been a soldier in the Civil War I had contracted several diseases, among them rheumatism with severe headaches, and at times the former was so painful that I was obliged to use crutches for five or six weeks at a time.

Through the influence of a friend I was induced to try Christian Science, which I did with very good results. I bought a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, and for some time I read the Christian Science literature, but after a while I became negligent in my reading. In fact I seemed dull and did not gain in understanding, and finally turned to drugs again. This was my condition in August, 1906, when I was stricken with entire helplessness of my left hand and arm, the stroke being somewhat lighter in my face and lower limb. I immediately made application to a Christian Science practitioner for help, with the result that after six treatments I could use my hand quite well, and in a short time (without further treatments) could use it as well as ever. At the same time there was an abnormal growth back of my ear, which had been very annoying and for which a doctor had recommended a local application, saying that if it did not disappear with this treatment an operation would be necessary. Through the work of a Christian Science practitioner, however, the growth disappeared after the second treatment.

As the world counts time I am now seventy-five years old. For over sixty years I had used tobacco, and although not a heavy drinker I did use liquor, and sometimes language which was not creditable. I can now say I am thoroughly healed of all these habits, and the same habits are distasteful to me. I have been in better health the last three years than at any time during the last thirty years. I give God the honor for this healing, through Christian Science as taught by Mrs. Eddy.
